Johnny's Selected Seeds is a local, privately held, employee-owned seed producer and merchant headquartered in Winslow, Maine, USA. The company was established in 1973 by our Founder and Chairman, Rob Johnston, Jr. Johnny's mission is helping families, friends, and communities to feed one another by providing superior seeds, tools, information and service.

To this end, Johnny's works as a team of employee owners and is currently seeking to hire a Technical Writer. As an employee-owner with Johnny’s, you could be part of a select team focused on delivering personalized service while providing superior seeds, tools, and information.

As a Technical Writer, you will lead the development, maintenance and coordination of all the technical information for Johnny’s products. This position works with the Breeding, Product Development, Sales and Marketing teams to generate clear and accurate technical information to support our customers. The ideal candidate must possess both a solid agricultural background, and technical writing ability, to be successful in the creation of technical information to support our customers.

This position reports to our Albion, Maine facility.


•Develop clear and accurate technical information for Johnny’s products, including, but not limited to:

a.Product Manuals
b.Cultural Information
c.Product Technical Sheets
e.Catalog Copy
f.Web Site
g.Multimedia initiatives

•Support the development and maintenance of a method to catalog and manage all technical information.
•General understanding of our products and customers to enable drafting of technical information that is consistent, accurate, and relevant.
•Continued focus on process improvement and quality.
•Actively communicate with teams in a timely manner, communicate well both verbally and in writing.
•Effectively prioritizes and manages multiple projects and goals,
•Responsible and accountable for meeting deadlines and assignments.
•Recognize problems and respond as necessary to assess issues and seek route cause.
•Effectively work on teams within a goal driven matrix management structure.
•Adapt to change well and is flexible and open to new ideas
•Constant focus on working safely.


1.B.S. in Horticulture or Biology, relevant experience will be considered.
2.Proven ability to draft technical information.
3.Knowledge of agricultural/horticultural principals and techniques.
4.Ability to develop key relationships internally and externally.
5.Ability to focus on project details.
6.Proven ability to work effectively on teams.
7.Demonstrated ability to effectively manage time and multiple tasks.
8.Working knowledge of standard office software (MS Word, Excel, etc.).
9.Experience in creating sales or marketing materials is a plus.


•Ability to travel as needed, domestically.
•Ability to sit at a computer workstation for long periods of time.
•Ability to read, count, and write to accurately complete all documentation.
•Ability to freely access all areas and locations of the business.
•Ability to work varied hours/days as business dictates.
