In 2011, Food Animal Concerns Trust (FACT) launched the Fund-a-Farmer Project www.fundafarmer.org , a competitive microgrants initiative to help farmers implement projects to improve animal welfare on their operations. In the first round of grants, we awarded over $13,000 to nine farms across the country for a variety of projects. FACT is now accepting grant applications for the next round of funding through its Fund-a-Farmer Project. We will award grants of up to $1,500 for projects that (1) help farms transition to pasture-based systems, (2) improve the marketing of their humane products, or (3) more generally enrich the conditions in which farm animals are raised. Working, independent family farmers that raise pigs, broiler chickens, laying hens, dairy cows and/or beef cattle are eligible to apply for any of the three types of grants. Projects involving goats and sheep are only eligible for marketing grants. New this year – farmers can apply directly online! More information about grant guidelines, eligibility requirements, project examples, and the application can be accessed at www.fundafarmer.org. Applications are due by May 1, 2013, and grants will be awarded in August 2013. |
