So many people have said they miss Small Farm Field Day (SFFD) that a movement is underway to bring back this popular event. Planned for late this spring, SFFD will teach rural living skills through a variety of hands-on activities.

Cultivating crops in hoophouses enables growers to control the environment. Having that control is one thing; knowing what to do with it is another. This year’s Spring Growth Conference will focus on managing the environment around hoophouse crops – the temperature, water, nutrients, humidity, light, ventilation, etc.

In the spring of 1983, a small but enthusiastic group met for the
afternoon at the Forest Entomology Lab in Augusta to share scionwood, cuttings, seeds and conversation about trees. The group called itself The Maine Tree Crop Alliance. The day was a big hit and the event was repeated the following year, again in Augusta.

For more than a decade, MOFGA’s Executive Director, Russell Libby, has been encouraging Mainers to set aside at least $10 a week for Maine-grown foods. If we could start there, Maine’s agricultural economy would get a boost of roughly $100 million.

While their first interest is dairy cattle, much of the information presented will apply to all species. The methods will include herbs, homeopathy, biologics and management techniques.

This is an annual event of the Alliance for a Clean and Healthy Maine, of which MOFGA is an active member. The focus of the day will be protecting children from unnecessary dangerous chemicals and heavy metals.

On March 28, MOFGA’s Spring Growth conference in Unity was dedicated to an all-day Farmers’ Market Workshop running from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. As I traveled to the conference, I was hoping for a decent turnout, and I was not disappointed. The Exhibition Hall was half filled with around 90 participants, many of whom had between 5 and 25 years of experience at farmers’ markets.
