Is Farm Town certified Organic?
Thank you all so much for your thoughtful comments. We received lots of feedback both on the general principals of buying/eating organic, and the more specifics of our farm's certification.

The Great Certification Impasse
Ok...this is a long post, with the caveat that the photos really have nothing to do with the words. We have been careful not to bore you with too much chatter but, it is January and it gets dark early, so there's a bit more time for writing.

Circling Our Wagons
We move into the autumn every year with a sense of relief. The late winter, spring and summer present with such a fury that we rarely have a moment to come up for air and evaluate how its all going. We are putting out fires and keeping the ship afloat.

Twilight of Agricultural Positivism
The season is winding down at Broadturn Farm. Interns are gone, frosts are regular, and the potatoes are out. (The potatoes? Yes, they are gone... remember? it was not such a good season.

Milk-face-book appropriate Ludditism
Well, the changing of the seasons brings many new things to the farm. But never this:Yes... Tonight at the dinner table sat Emma, Flora, myself (John), and Stacy with 127 of her friends. I have never made apologies for our use of computer technology on the farm.

First Frost
A quick glance at the pasture from the hallway window reveals a certain dullness; the grasses bent over and slightly gray. It's the hard evidence on the cars in the driveway that let me know that frost has arrived at the farm. This is the top of the truck with full fledged ice crystals.

Agrarian Roots
We are often graced with stories from guests at the farm. The most remarkable aspect to this storytelling to me is the theme. There must be an element of inspiration associated with a visit to the farm the musters a recollection about agrarian roots.

Succession Planting
Marketers throughout New England tell us, "Come September 1, get out the jack-o-lanterns, and scare-crow displays: It's Fall!" Despite the advice we are still planting seedlings like we have been doing since April. Here, Amanda puts in some Spinach.

(Beauty)A friend of mine who is a school teacher once told me she equates August with one long Sunday. This would mean that June is the equivalent to Friday and July is like Saturday. The big news of the week is not great. In fact, it makes our hearts sink.

Full Bloom
Finally it looks like the heat has come, and the garden is incredibly responsive. Not only do the plants need the warmth to put out flowers, but heat allows the micro-organisms in the soil to decompose organic matter and the organic fertilizers we use.

24 Hours of Heaven
After many weeks with no time away from the farm, we took a little 24 hour break (24 hours of heaven!) . John rowing, and Stacy doing the hard work of taking the picture (those are her boots up.) Time off can be so essential to mental health. It allows perspective in a tough season like this one.
