Hatchet Cove Farm, a family run mixed organic vegetable farm, provides a bounty of seasonal vegetables to our summer and fall CSA members in the Mid-coast region. We also wholesale to area stores and restaurants.
Hatchet Cove Farm is MOFGA-certified organic because of the wide-reaching implications it has for our customers, our community, and the earth. While it may require more record-keeping and paperwork, and while is certainly more expensive (in everything from organic seed to certification costs), being certified means that we're continually forced to consider the wider implications of every aspect of our farming operation. Without certified organic growers who are required to buy organic seed, for example, there would be far less incentive for seed growers to develop varieties that are appropriate for organic growers, and almost no incentive to grow seed without conventional fertilizers and pesticides. And meeting MOFGA's stringent certification standards means that our CSA members and customers know how seriously we take our commitment to organic principles. In addition, being certified organic with MOFGA means that we are supporting MOFGA's efforts to advocate, at both a state and national level, for farm and food policies that bolster a healthy environment, a healthy food system, and healthy communities. We're proud to be certified organic with MOFGA!
